September 2009, IBA Terraces in Grossräschen/Germany

The problem of the so-called "post-mining landscapes" is a subject which attracts a great deal of interest all over the world. This was evident at the IBA conference "Opportunity: Post-Mining Landscape", when 200 experts from from 25 countries and all continents compared notes and exchanged experiences on the IBA Terraces. As a guideline for discussion, delegates were presented ten theses on the management of post-mining landscapes which reflect the experiences of the IBA and its partners over the ten-year period in Lusatia.

Aims & contents

The conference presented different mining regions and their strategies for coping with structural change. Pivotal questions are how to deal with the departure of industry, what potential is offered by the redevelopment of landscapes used for mining and how the region can develop a new identity.
